Aboriginal JFR Host Communities

Host communities work with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) to fund and recruit the Aboriginal Junior Forest Rangers (Aboriginal JFR) Crew Members and Leaders.

Host communities:

  • are made up of Aboriginal communities from all over Alberta, and
  • can sponsor a camp-based aboriginal crew

Métis Organizations can support camp-based or community crew members.

Aboriginal Camp-based Crew

For the 2012 season, the Alberta Junior Forest Ranger Program is piloting two, seven-week, camp-based crews for First Nation community members and Métis Status students.

Community Eligibility

Aboriginal communities are encouraged to apply to host an Aboriginal JFR crew. However, the community must meet these minimum standards to be considered:

  • First Nations communities and Métis settlements that directly engage and promote natural environment careers, are eligible to apply.
  • Corporate entities (First Nations Corporations) must be in good standing.
  • Métis organizations must have a provincial liaison for camp-based crews and a liaison in the community for a community crew.
  • The community or organization must be able to fund half of the costs directly associated with the operation of the crew. This would include, but is not limited to, the cost for wages, training, and vehicles.
  • The community or organization must provide a qualified leader and sub leader whom are available from the end of May to the end of August.
  • The community must arrange for and provide transportation for leaders to attend training in Hinton, for crew members to attend training in Hinton, and to return crew members from Bull of the Woods (Nojack, Alberta) to their host community.
