Crew Leader

Enjoy a challenging and rewarding summer experience working with youth in forested areas.

Under the guidance of Sustainable Resource Development staff, successful candidates help design and supervise a safe and gratifying work/education schedule that meets the objectives of the Alberta Junior Forest Ranger program.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Addressing staff issues as they arise
  • Conducting evaluations
  • Organizing training sessions

Prerequisites

All applicants must:

  • Comply with third-party Vehicle Rental Policy (this may include age restrictions).
  • Have excellent communication and team building skills.
  • Have comprehensive outdoor skills and experience.
  • Have supervisory experience.
  • For Aboriginal Crew Leaders, you must be selected by the host community:
    • For camp-based leaders, you must be available for evenings and weekends throughout July and August.
    • For community-based leaders, you must reside in the community during the season (June to August).
  • Possess the following valid certifications/licenses:
    • Unrestricted Class 5 Driver's Licence (GDL not accepted)
    • Defensive Driving Certificate
    • Standard First Aid and Level A CPR

Asset Qualifications

  • Completed two years of post-secondary education, or equivalent in years of work experience, in:
    • Education
    • Forestry
    • Recreation
    • Resource management or a related field
  • Chainsaw experience
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Instructor Level Certification in Canoeing, Kayaking, Climbing, etc.
  • Previous experience with Alberta Junior Forest Rangers or Junior Forest Wardens.

Crew Sub Leader

An excellent opportunity to step into a supervisory role while mentoring youth into fields related to Natural Resources.

Reporting to the Crew Leader, the Sub Leader assists with logistics for work projects and training opportunities.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Addressing staff issues as they arise.
  • Assisting the Crew Leader in daily camp operation
  • Organizing training sessions
  • Supervising the Junior Forest Rangers or Aboriginal Junior Forest Rangers

Prerequisites

All applicants must have the same as the Crew Leader with exception to experience. Sub Leaders must have completed one year of post-secondary education, or equivalent in years of work experience.

For Aboriginal Crew Sub Leaders, you must be selected by the host community:

  • For camp-based, you must be available for evenings and weekends throughout July and August.
  • For community-based, you must reside in the community during the season (June to August).

Asset Qualifications

  • Chainsaw experience
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Previous experience with Alberta Junior Forest Rangers or Junior Forest Wardens.
  • Supervisory Experience

Leader Recruitment and Selection

All applications are reviewed and due to volume of applications, only those selected for interviews will be contacted. Interviews take place in Edmonton or by teleconference. Candidates may be considered for either Leader or Sub Leader.

All applicants who have gone through the interview process will receive confirmation of their status by email.

Work Shift

All Camp-based Crew Crew Leader
May and June

Monday to Friday, evening sessions during training, and one Saturday during training.

July and August

The work week is generally Monday to Friday plus evenings and every second Saturday and Sunday. Leaders alternate weekends with the crew.

Typically, Saturday is spent in the local community taking care of personal business and Sunday is a crew recreation day.

Leaders plan and implement evening activities for their crew.

Aboriginal Community Crew Leader
May and June

Monday to Friday. Occasional weekends.

July and August

The work week is generally Monday to Friday with Saturdays and Sundays as days off.

The standard workday generally starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. however some evening work is required.

Salary

Compensation ranges between $20.48 and $21.17 per hour, plus 11.2% holiday pay. For the camp-based crew, overtime pay is provided during weekends and $30 every second evening.
