Alberta JFR Parent Info
Alberta Junior Forest Ranger/Aboriginal Junior Forest Ranger Program Information for Parents
Either your teenager told you about their interest in the Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) or Aboriginal Junior Forest Ranger
(AJFR) program or you are searching for a program best suiting your son or daughter.
Here is some insight about the program.
Ranger Qualifications
When selecting rangers for the summer, we review each application, arrange for an interview, and look for the following:
Ranger Qualities
- Adaptive
- Enthusiastic
- Independent
- Inquisitive
- Respectful
- Takes initiative
Physical Fitness
- To participate on contained wildfires, individuals must pass a fitness test – a two-mile walk with a 25-pound backpack
in under 30 minutes.
- Each crew will experience physical labour at some point in the summer, and the work can go all day for multiple days.
- On the weekends, crews will be expected to participate on long day hikes, canoeing trips, or other recreational activity.
Crew Leader Qualifications & Training
If your son or daughter is selected, you can expect them to be in the capable hands of our well trained Leaders.
Often, we hire post-secondary students or graduates that come to us from all over Alberta and Canada, and they bring with
them an assortment of experience. Nevertheless, before our leaders meet your son or daughter, know that they have been put
through an extensive selection and training.
For more information about what we expect from our Crew Leaders, see:
Family Visits and Contacts
Visiting a Crew
Visits from family and friends to the camps or projects are discouraged as they are disruptive to the routine of the crew.
Opportunities to visit the camp for family and friends include:
- August Long weekend. As this is family holiday crew members are off for the weekend and arrangements will be required
for crew members to be picked up. The Friday afternoon is a time when you can have a tour of the camp.
- Bull of the Woods year-end event. Parents are encouraged to cheer on the crew members as they participate in a culture
showcase and various competitions. For parents, camping is located nearby and crew members leave with family and/or friends
on the day after compeition.
Sending Mail and Phone Calls
Situations may arise during the summer and you will need to contact your son or daughter. If you are having trouble contacting
them, do not be alarmed.
The crews can work in remote places that do not have constant cell coverage.
